More of the same...

Since 1980, when i was 5, the money has been sucked out of the economy by business and the wealthy. The homogenization of our country has accelerated because it's good for "business". Jobs have been offshored at alarming rates. Multinationals who are loyal to no one but themselves have consolidated and consolidated again.

We used to have protections in place. These protections were in place through the most prosperous times in our country. I don't understand why people let this happen. I don't understand why people think Reagan is a hero, he was the one that started all of this. The average wage in adjusted dollars from 1980 to 2008 increased a mere $800. So much for doing better than our parents. Thanks Baby Boomers.

Missing my father

This year, I've missed my father more than since he passed. The eclipse last night reminded me of the time in the early 1980's, my parents took us out to see a lunar eclipse. The woke us up late, and we drove down the road to a huge cornfield. That cornfield is now a subdivision called Rural Point Estates. It was cold that night. We took folding webbed lawn chairs and blankets. We sat as a family, huddled in the cold, and watched the moon seemingly disappear. I remember that it took a while, just as it did last night. My sister watched it through my Dad's camera, because he a had a zoom lens. We tried to take pictures, but it was hard to tell on the prints what it was due to lack of light and the smallness of the moon in the picture. We sat out there for hours and had a good time as a family. When it was over, and the sun started to come up, we went to Howard Johnson's for breakfast. Although it's kind of a silly thing to remember, I think I'll always remember that event with warmth and fondness.

I know a lot of folks are mad about wikileaks. No matter what they do, I feel it to be necessary. Since we have no investigative journalism in our country, we unfortunately have to rely on people with questionable motives. I will always choose more freedom of information then less. If we don't demand visibility of our government internally, then we must suffer the possibility of having this information exposed externally.

From the wrong time

Through much of my life, I've felt like I'm from the wrong time. It's not that I lament living in the time I'm in, but my interests, beliefs and what not would have been more in vogue for someone my age about 30 or 40 years ago. I prefer vinyl records. I prefer local businesses. I prefer film cameras. It would seem I take the outdated choice every time.

It's not that I crave nostalgia, or resist change. I suspect that I resent learning something when it was more difficult, and technology makes it easy.

Things I may have learned recently

I've been going through some changes in life. We all do from time to time. I entered Weight Watchers in August of 2008 to shut up a friend. I signed up at that meeting and have been going since. Although my weight loss hasn't been spectacular, 60 pounds at most, and at about 50 pounds off currently from my heaviest; it's done wonders for me in other ways.

This was the jumping point for entering therapy, changing medication that had kept me in low level depression for years, and as cheesy as it sounds, self discovery.

When this started, I was in the crumbling phase of a relationship with someone that was probably not healthy for me. This would happen 2 more times. I have generally consented to meet or date anyone who showed me some attention. I was far too shy and had far too much self loathing to feel I deserved anything more. I'm still shy in large groups, but it's something I'm working on.

It seems to have taken 35 years, and inspiration from the most unlikely of places, but I have found a measure of self worth. Things people have said to me, confronting my Mom about my parents taking me out of college when I was 20, living on my own, the end of a close friendship, the beginning of some others, and mostly, finding out that the problems I have can be overcome, and are not my fault.

Recently, I read on MSNBC in response to the poor 15 year old girl who hanged herself because of the treatment she received from her classmates a composite of letters and emails that people from across the country had sent in. Those who have been bullied or teased to an extreme as children suffer what is essentially chronic emotional abuse. I'll not say that mine is more or less severe a case than any other person's, but it helped to see that there were others who had been dealt these blows and survived. It's terrible to me that anyone has experienced the pain that I have, but it's good to know that it's recoverable. I haven't been sure most of my life of that. It's awful though, that I received this solace after the suicide of a 15 year old.

Currently I'm doing pretty well. A change in medication last summer has given me an emotional range I've not had in over 10 years. Now I'm dealing less with hurt from years ago, but more on trying to figure out who I really am. It sucks that I'm doing this 10 to 15 years after most people, but I suppose, better late than never.
